Black that doesn't change the numbers

Black oxide reacts with the iron in steel to produce magnetite (Fe₃O₄) — a black compound integrated into the metal rather than deposited on top. The result is a uniform matte-black appearance at typically less than 0.0001" per side, making it the correct choice for low-reflectivity or aesthetic treatment with zero dimensional impact on threads, bores, and close-tolerance interfaces.

What it does — and doesn't

Black oxide provides light corrosion resistance for dry or mildly humid indoor environments; parts headed outdoors are typically oiled or waxed after blackening. What it does exceptionally well is produce a consistent, attractive matte-black surface at low cost — without chipping or peeling like paint.
